Janelle Lynch | Los Jardines de México

The gallery is thrilled to present the work of American photographer Janelle Lynch in Berlin. The series LOS JARDINES DE MÉXICO documents the gardens and parks of Mexico City as mystical places that reflect the cycle of life. The project, developed over the course of several years, is composed of four chapters. The first series, LOS JARDINES DE LOS JUEGOS shows abandoned, weathered playgrounds, places that nature has conquered back in time. The series DONDE ANDABA sets the rampant vegetation against the defiant architecture of the city. AKNA, the Mayan goddess of fertility, lends its name to a typological series of anthropomorphic tree stumps and LA FOSA COMMUN finally documents the death fields that have existed for centuries and that are still used today in the middle of the city as an anonymous cemetery.

JANELLE LYNCH studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York where she teaches today at ICP, the International Center of Photography. She gained international attention through the project RIVER, a series of large river landscapes, some of which are also on display during the exhibition. LOS JARDINES DE MEXICO is Janelle Lynch’s first publication with Radius Books, Santa Fe. Work by Janelle Lynch can be found in important collections both public and private. After several years in Mexico and Barcelona, Janelle Lynch today lives and works in New York.

Die Serie LOS JARDINES DE MÉXICO der amerikanischen Fotografin Janelle Lynch dokumentiert die Gärten und Parks der Metropole Mexico-City als mystische Orte, die den Kreislauf des Lebens spiegeln. Das über mehrere Jahre erarbeitete Projekt setzt sich aus mehreren Kapiteln zusammen. Die erste Serie, LOS JARDINES DE JUEGOS, zeigt seit Jahren verlassene, verwitterte Kinderspielplätze, Orte, die sich die Natur im Laufe der Zeit zurück erobert hat. Die Serie DONDE ANDABA setzt der wild wuchernden Pflanzenwelt die trotzige Architektur der Stadt gegenüber. AKNA, die Maya-Göttin der Fruchtbarkeit, leiht ihren Namen einer typologischen Serie von anthropomorphen Baumstümpfen und LA FOSA COMMUN schließlich dokumentiert die seit Jahrhunderten bestehenden Totenfelder, die auch heute noch mitten in der Stadt als anonymer Gemeindefriedhof genutzt werden.

JANELLE LYNCH studierte an der School of Visual Arts in New York und unterrichtet dort heute am ICP, dem International Center of Photography. Sie erlangte internationale Beachtung durch das Projekt “River”, eine Serie großformatiger Fluss-Landschaften, von denen ebenfalls einige während der Ausstellung zu sehen sind.
