BRUCE GILDEN, born in Brooklyn in 1946, is one of the best known and most influential street photographers in the world. His work is found in almost all the major photography collections, has received multiple awards and has been exhibited internationally. Gilden is a member of the prestigious Magnum agency.

Bruce Gilden became famous for his street work from Coney Iceland, New York, Haiti or the Japanese underworld. All photographic series by Bruce Gilden, mostly portrait series, are distinguished by the use of flash and the proximity to the subject. Just as spotlights, Gilden’s images take the people shown out of their context. In the search for his “characters” Bruce Gilden shows a keen sense for people whom life has not passed by without leaving a trace, for faces that tell a story. And just the way life goes – many of these stories have no happy ending.
In addition to original vintage prints from the series “Coney Iceland” from the 1960s and “Facing New York” from the 1980s, the exhibition presents new, large-format color pictures that were made in connection to the Magnum group project “Postcards from America” ?and were taken in different places throughout the U.S.
