The transatlantic communications link between Great Britain and North America, the thin fiber optic lines of the deep-sea cable through which most of our daily data communication flows, and the places where these cables make landfall on both sides of the Atlantic, become threads in a web of analogies in the new work of British photographer Andy Sewell. “Looking at these vast unknowable entities – the ocean and the internet – we sense their strangeness. We can understand each conceptually but can only ever see or bump into small bits of them.”
The series combines technology studies and landscape images taken along the English and American coasts, it is edited in repetitive sequences and becomes an analogy of our modern life: “Things in different spatial or temporal phases intertwine and coexist. Worlds we think of as separate bleed into each other – the near and the distant, the ocean and the internet, the physical and the virtual, what we think of as the natural with the cultural and the technological.”
Andy Sewell continues in saying: “Many of the problems we face now seem linked to ways of describing the world that insists on rigid boundaries and fixed identities. The work explores the entanglement we find if we look beyond these assumptions and go in search of connection, in search of lines that communicate between here and there, between surface and the deep.”
Andy Sewell, born 1978, lives and works in London. His work is exhibited internationally and can be found in important collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Columbia University Art Collection, New York or the MAST Foundation, Bologna. His first book, “The Heath”, received the International Photobook Award in 2012. The book accompanying this exhibition, “Known and Strange Things Pass”, is published by Skinnerboox.

Die Kabel der transatlantischen Kommunikationsverbindung zwischen Großbritannien und Nordamerika, die dünnen Glasfaserleitungen des Unterseekabels durch das ein großer Teil unserer täglichen Datenkommunikation fließt, sowie die Orte, an denen diese Kabel auf beiden Seiten des Atlantik aus den Tiefen der See auf Land treffen, wurden für den englischen Fotografen Andy Sewell zu Fäden in einem Netz von Analogien. „Wenn wir diese beiden riesigen, unbegreiflichen Einheiten betrachten – das Internet und den Ozean – dann spüren wir ihre Fremdheit, ihre Unüberschaubarkeit. Wir verstehen ihre Gesamtheit, grundsätzlich, aber sehen oder begegnen immer nur kleinen Teilen von ihnen.“
Die Serie verbindet Technologie-Studien und Landschaftsbilder, die entlang der englischen und der amerikanischen Küste entstanden, sie ist in sich wiederholenden Sequenzen editiert und wird zur Analogie unseres modernen Lebens: „Dinge, die in ganz unterschiedlichen räumlichen oder zeitlichen Zusammenhängen existieren, vermischen sich auf einmal und koexistieren. Welten, die wir für getrennt hielten, fließen ineinander – das Nahe und das Ferne, das Internet und der Ozean, das Physische und das Virtuelle, was wir für die natürliche Welt halten und Kultur und Technologie.“
Und schließlich folgert Sewell: „Viele der Probleme, mit denen wir heute konfrontiert sind, scheinen mit einer Beschreibung der Welt zu tun zu haben, die aus starren Grenzen und festen Identitäten besteht. Die Arbeit untersucht die Verflechtungen, die wir finden, wenn wir über diese Annahmen hinausblicken und nach Verbindungen suchen, nach Linien, die zwischen hier und dort, zwischen Oberfläche und Tiefe kommunizieren.“
Andy Sewell, geboren 1978, lebt und arbeitet in London. Seine Arbeiten werden international ausgestellt und finden sich in wichtigen Sammlungen wie der des Victoria & Albert Museums in London, der Columbia University Art Collection, New York oder der MAST Foundation, Bologna. Sein erstes Buch, „The Heath“, erhielt 2012 den International Photobook Award, das aktuelle Buch zur Ausstellung, „Known and Strange Things Pass“ erschient bei Skinnerboox.
